En 1998, les graphistes Karel Martens et Wigner Bierma prennent l’initiative de créer au sein de l’école d’art d’Arnhem aux Pays-Bas (ArtEZ Institute of the Arts), un atelier de recherche, d’échange et d’expérimentation des pratiques du graphisme et de la typographie. Aujourd’hui dirigé par Armand Mevis, l’atelier (Werkplaats en néerlandais), installé dans un bâtiment autrefois occupé par une radio locale, a accueilli depuis son ouverture des designers et des artistes du monde entier. Ils ont pu y entremêler et y développer des recherches plastiques, graphiques, éditoriales ou curatoriales, tout en les associant à des situations de commandes réelles.

L’exposition « On Air » à l’Institut supérieur des beaux-arts de Besançon, propose de montrer les travaux de Stuart Bailey (1973, GB), Radim Pesko (1976, CZ), Sandra Kassenaar (1982, NL), Na Kim (1979, KR), Karl Nawrot (1976, FR), Boy Vereecken (1982, BE), Jeremy Jansen (NL), Simone Koller (1980, CH), Ines Cox (1987, BE), Corina Neuenschwander (1980, CH), Valentijn Goethals (1987, BE) et Bardhi Haliti (1985, XK) amorcés ou effectués durant leur passage au Werkplaats Typografie, et accompagnés d’une production plus récente, jalonnant ainsi les trajectoires de leurs productions.

La graphiste et enseignante à l’Académie royale des beaux-arts d’Anvers Ines Cox conduira un workshop intégré à l’exposition. Réflexion autour de la pédagogie et de l’enseignement du graphisme et de la typographie, la production par les étudiants de l’Institut supérieur des beaux-arts de Besançon ira rejoindre le corpus des travaux exposés.

In 1998, the graphic designers Karel Martens and Wigner Bierma decided to create within the art school of Arnhem in the Netherlands (ArtEZ Institute of the Arts), a master program dedicated to research and experimental practices in graphic design and typography. Today ruled by Armand Mevis, the workshop (Werkplaats in dutch), settled in a former radio station building, has welcome since its opening worlwide’s designers and artists. Every designer has developed some graphic design’ research, artisic, editorial and curatorial, and deal this experimental research with real clients works.

The « On Air » exhibition at the Institut of Fine Art of Besançon will show the works of Stuart Bailey (1973, GB), Radim Pesko (1976, CZ), Sandra Kassenaar (1982, NL), Na Kim (1979, KR), Karl Nawrot (1976, FR), Boy Vereecken (1982, BE), Jeremy Jansen (NL), Simone Koller (1980, CH), Ines Cox (1987, BE), Corina Neuenschwander (1980, CH), Valentijn Goethals (1987, BE) et Bardhi Haliti (1985, XK), begin or design during their own studies at the Werkplaats and deal with more recent production.

The designer and teacher at the Royal Academy of Art from Antwerp, Ines Cox will run a workshop inside the whole exhibition space. The workshop’s program will be about the teaching skills of the graphic design and typography. The student’s production will be part of the exhibition materials.
